We see this everywhere—on the doors of big mansions, small roadside shops, trucks, and brand-new cars. A fresh lemon strung together with seven green chilies. It might seem like a superstition to some, but let me explain the beautiful and fascinating astrological logic behind this practice.
The Story of Lakshmi and Alakshmi: According to our ancient scriptures, Goddess Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and sweet things) has an older sister named Alakshmi (the goddess of poverty, ruin, and misery). Wherever Alakshmi goes, poverty follows. While Goddess Lakshmi loves sweet and pleasant offerings, Alakshmi thrives on sour, pungent, and spicy things.
The belief is that Alakshmi roams around looking for houses to enter. When you hang a sour lemon and spicy green chilies at your main door, Alakshmi comes to your door, sees her favorite spicy and sour food right at the entrance, eats it there, satisfies her hunger, and turns back without ever stepping inside your house. The Power of Panchmukhi Hanuman: Lord Hanuman assumed his Panchmukhi (five-faced) form to kill the demon Ahiravana in the netherworld (Patal Lok). The five faces are Hanuman (Monkey), Narasimha (Lion), Garuda (Eagle), Varaha (Boar), and Hayagriva (Horse). This specific form is considered the most powerful force in the universe for destroying dark magic, evil spirits, and severe Vastu doshas (defects).
How to Use It: Get a blessed picture or a metallic Yantra of Panchmukhi Hanuman Ji. Place it exactly above the main door, on the outside, so that the picture is looking at the people walking toward your house. You can also place a matching picture on the inside of the door frame, so when you are leaving the house for important work, you see His face and receive His blessings for success. Every Tuesday, make sure to light an incense stick near the door to honor Him.
5. Alum (Phitkari) in a Black Cloth
This is one of the most hidden, secret astrological remedies that many people do not know about, but it is wonderfully effective. Alum, commonly known in Indian households as ‘Phitkari’, is a crystalline substance that has an incredible natural capacity to absorb both physical impurities (which is why it is used to clean muddy water) and spiritual impurities.
If you have a beautiful home or a very successful business, people will naturally feel jealous. That jealousy creates a heavy, dark energy cord that attaches to your house, causing appliances to break, money to drain unnecessarily, or family members to feel constantly fatigued.
The Remedy: Go to the market and buy a solid block of Phitkari (do not use the powdered form). Take a piece of pure black cotton cloth. Because it absorbs so much negativity, the Alum block will slowly start to crack, melt, or change shape inside the cloth over a few months. Once every six months, take the old bundle, throw it into a fire, or flush it down the toilet, and replace it with a fresh block. 6. The Holy Swastika and Om Symbols

The Swastika is the ultimate symbol of auspiciousness, representing Lord Ganesha (the remover of obstacles). Hanging or painting a Swastika at your door ensures that no good work is ever blocked.

- For Protection: Mix pure orange Sindoor (the one offered to Lord Hanuman) with a few drops of Jasmine oil or Ghee. Sindoor represents the fiery, protective energy of Mars. Drawing a Swastika with this mixture creates a fire-wall of protection that evil energies cannot cross.
Make sure the Swastika is drawn perfectly straight, with the four dots in the corners. You can also place the ‘Om’ symbol or a ‘Trishul’ (Trident) at the center of the door frame above eye level. 7. Black Turmeric (Kali Haldi) and Sea Salt

2. No Squeaky or Creaky Sounds This is a very common issue that people ignore. Does your main door make a harsh creaking noise when you open or close it? Make sure you have a bright, warm light bulb installed outside the door, and turn it on every evening when the sun sets. The transition period between day and night (Sandhya Kaal) is when both good and bad spirits roam the earth. A bright light invites the good and blinds the bad.
5. Keep the Threshold (Dehlij) Elevated In ancient India, every house had a raised wooden or stone threshold at the bottom of the door frame. Today, modern flats often have flat floors that flow straight into the hallway. A threshold acts as a physical and spiritual speed breaker. It stops the wealth from flowing out and makes the negative energy stumble before coming in. If you don’t have a built-in threshold, you can stick a strip of marble, wood, or even a simple red/yellow tape on the floor across the doorway to symbolically act as a boundary.

Do Not Place Dustbins or Brooms Near the Door The broom (Jhaadu) is respected as a symbol of Lakshmi because it cleanses the house, but it should never be kept near the main door, and certainly not visible to outsiders. You do not need to do all of the remedies mentioned above at the same time. Doing too many things can clutter the space and cause confusion. Look at your life, analyze what you need the most, and pick one or two remedies that resonate deeply with you.
